  66.      1. Introduction
  67.  
  68.        This IEN is  intended  to  facilitate  discussion  of
  69.      internet  delays  as  seen  from  the UK. It presents a
  70.      series of measurements of round trip times for GGP echo
  71.      packets.
  72.  
  73.        The GGP packet generator was an LSI-11  host  on  the
  74.      UCL Port Expander (the UCLnet/SATNET/Nullnet gateway is
  75.      another host on this Port Expander).  Round-trip  times
  76.      were  measured by timestamping the packet on initiation
  77.      of output and again on completion of  input.  The  time
  78.      reference  was  a programmable clock with 1 millisecond
  79.      resolution (based on a 10 MHz crystal).

  81.        Echo  delays  were   measured   for   the   following
  82.      destinations:

  93.      For each destination,  1000  packets  were  sent  at  4
  94.      second intervals.
  95.  
  96.        The results are presented  in  the  following  pages.
  97.      Each page is devoted to one destination. Two histograms
  98.      are provided  for  the  given  destination,  the  upper
  99.      showing  the structure of the distribution of times and
  100.      the lower with a scale common to  all  destinations  to
  101.      simplify comparisons.

  103.        On each histogram the count is given as a  percentage
  104.      of  the  total  number of replies received. The heading
  105.      gives the total number of replies received for the 1000
  106.      packets  sent;  the  minimum, maximum and average times
  107.      for all the replies; and the number of replies  falling
  108.      within,  above  and  below the histogram range plotted.
  109.      The round trip times given  are  in  milliseconds.  The
  110.      date  of  the  experiment is in the English (day/month)
  111.      format and the time is given as GMT.
